In February 2009, GPA Holdings will showcase its antique string instruments in the concert “Jewels of the Bygone Era”.
The concert has garnered much news coverage on the fact that many of these antique string instruments are being publicly played after decades of dormancy.
The concert, co-organized with Singapore Press Holdings’ The Peak magazine, has attracted an international audience, including ambassadors, foreign dignitaries and Guest-of-Honour, Dr. Lily Neo, MP for Jalan Besar GRC.

“Jewels of the Bygone Era” will showcase rare string instruments being played on stage for the first time in Asia. These “jewels” featured include a 1759 Gennaro Gagliano violin, a 1780 Giuseppe Guadagnini cello, and a 1909 Giusepppe Pedrazzini violin. The audience can look out for a 1758 Paolo Antonio Testore violin, played by Ivan Peev, that has not been played publicly in 50 years, as well as a 1735 David Tecchler cello, played by Karen Yap, worth an estimated US$800,000.
Classical music enthusiasts will also be delighted with well-known pieces such as the Concerto for Two Violins in D minor by J. S. Bach and the Concerto for Two Cellos in G minor by Antonio Lucio Vivaldi. The audience will also charmed by entertaining pieces such as Paul Schoenfield’s Café Music, Astór Piazolla’s Tango and Fiddle Faddle by Leroy Anderson.
