EARLY DETECTION & TREATMENT SAVE PATIENTS THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS
- “ICON® & DIAGNOdent™” to save your teeth before the pain sets in

03 Nov 2009

Singapore’s leading dental group Team GPA, which adopts technology as its cutting edge in dentistry, introduces the “ICON® & DIAGNOdent” solution to save both your teeth and money. Caries, a process that attacks enamel and tooth structure, is the most common dental problem affecting patients today. These caries will gradually develop into cavities and eventually tooth loss, where patients would require expensive dental treatment. By treating caries early, patients will not have to worry about their teeth developing into cavities or tooth decay.

Team GPA’s solution, “ICON® & DIAGNOdent”, encompasses diagnostics as well as preemptive treatment for caries. The DIAGNOdent Pen 2190, developed by world’s leading dental equipment manufacturer, KaVo Dental Corporation, is designed to detect caries, and removes the “guess work” for dentists. During routine dental checks, dentists tend to press a sharp probe on patients’ teeth to test for cavities, which is not only inaccurate but also creates more discomfort for patients. In addition, caries that develop in between teeth and under the gum are more difficult to detect.

The DIAGNOdentPen 2190 utilises laser that works with a detector that analyses different fluorescence of any caries-affected enamel, compared to healthy teeth. While the dentist scans the tooth surface for caries, the results will be reflected visually and acoustically. The higher the measured result, the higher or more intensive the signal tone; this way the patient will also receives feedback from the system. A reading of 0 to 13 indicates healthy teeth, while a reading of 14 and above indicates the occurrence of caries.

At the early stage, caries can be treated with fluoride. However, if the caries develop deeper beneath the enamel, a filling or even more invasive treatment is required. Prior to each filling, dentists usually will drill into the tooth to prepare the tooth for the filling, or restorations.

ICON®, the innovative treatment for caries from DMG Dental, seals caries before they develop into cavities and decay. Recently launched at the FDI World Dental Federation Convention in Singapore, ICON® preserves healthy hard tissue, increases the lifespan of the tooth effectively through the infiltration method, without the need for drilling or anesthesia.

The ICON® treatment allows quick and easy access to the affected area without drilling, through an Approximal-Tip made from ultra-thin film, as seen in the pictures above. Dentists at Team GPA will be able to treat caries that form on the surface, as well as even in between teeth.

Dr. Wilson Goh, managing director of Team GPA, said: “It makes great sense that these two systems go hand-in-hand in terms of the detection and treatment of caries. Team GPA’s “ICON® & DIAGNOdent” solution not only brings a level of comfort for our patients, but also our dentists. With the DIAGNOdent Pen 2190, our dentists can now better diagnose the condition of patients’ teeth, and offer more suitable treatment options. ICON® seals caries and prevent them from deteriorating into more serious problems, relieving patients of pain and saving hefty costs in dental treatments. At Team GPA, we believe in bringing in the latest in dental technology for the benefit of our patients. These two new advances in dental technology will complement the existing systems in Team GPA.”

Team GPA champions the use of innovative dental technology in Singapore. In September 2009, it was the first in Singapore to adopt the Waterlase MD Turbo handpiece. The handpiece, which will be attached to the Waterlase MD™ system, possesses breakthrough dental laser optical technology capable of cutting speeds comparable to a high-speed drill, and even greater precision and accuracy previously unattainable with conventional dental lasers in the market. The Waterlase MD2™ system uses a combination of Yttrium-Scandium-Gallium Garnet (YSGG) laser energy and water, through a process called HydroPhotonics™. It replaces the drill and dental scalpel in many dental procedures with lesser or no need for anaesthetics.
